Honouring a Trailblazer: Linda Joyce Beere’s Legacy at SWPS and Beyond
11 Oct 2024
General

Linda Joyce Beere joined SWPS teaching staff in 1982, while I was a student there myself. She worked at SWPS until 1987, when she moved to Seattle with her husband Gerry for four years. On their return to the UK in 1991 she rejoined the SWPS staff, until retiring in 2000.

Linda had been a trail-blazer in her own education, one of only 2 women studying physics at Queen Mary College, London, among 250 men. In her time at Perkins, she taught physics and computing and also brought her passion for engineering, technology and design technology and  her can-do attitude to the girls. She helped teams design and build go-karts and taught girls to use computer guided lathes, among many other resources in the technology lab.

Linda's time at Perkins overlapped with Ann Darlow, Deirdre Puttock, Mary Roberston, Doreen Evans, Pat Mason, Jane Ogilvie, Rosemary Greenslade and many more.

After leaving SWPS in 2000, Linda enjoyed a long and busy retirement. She played golf, continued to be an active member in Thames Valley Hockey Club and was part of a team of volunteers running Virginia Water Library. She also played a very active role in the lives of her eight grandchildren and welcomed two great-granchildren since 2021!

Linda passed away in St Peter's Hospital on 22nd September 2024, 10 days after her 60th wedding anniversary.

Her funeral will be at Woking Crematorium on Monday 14th October at 12.00pm.
